The lowest solar atmospheric layer, the photosphere, is characterized by a plethora of phenomena mainly linked to convective flows, which transport plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun’s interior. Sunspots are among the most visible and studied features of this intense plasma – magnetic field coupling. Studying the evolution of magnetic fields in the photospheric plasma is key to understanding all processes occurring in the Sun’s different atmospheric layers, which are responsible for energy-releasing phenomena that also affect space weather.
