Welcome to the Astronomical Observatory of Rome, the Capital’s gaze on the Universe.

Established in 1923 by the merger of the two main astronomical observatories of Rome in the 19th century, the Astronomical Observatory of Rome (Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma - OAR) is currently one of the 16 research structures of the National institute for Astrophysics (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica - INAF).

In OAR activities are being carried out covering all areas of contemporary astrophysical research, such as the Sun and the bodies of the Solar System, stars, galaxies, the formation of Planetary Systems, Black Holes, Quasars and Supernovae, Large-Scale Universe. The activities carried out at OAR include the acquisition of new observations, the analysis of existent data, the development of numerical and theorical models, the creation of new instrumentation for the best telescopes in operation and for those under construction.

Many university students and young collaborators take part in OAR activities, which, over and above research, include public and school engagement activities, which are also organized in order to allow the use of unique cultural and historical assets preserved in the Observatory.
