HYPERION Science Collaboration

The rapid growth of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBH) powering luminous QSOs at the Reionization Epoch (z>6) is a hot topic in astrophysics that spurred extensive observational campaigns.

Our HYPERION Science Collaboration (HSC) is designed to shed light on the rapid SMBH/host assembly of the first luminous QSOs by employing:

  1. a physically-motivated selection of z>6 QSOs powered by high SMBH growth rate, and
  2. a control-sample of similar luminosity QSOs at z=2-3 to reveal any possible redshift evolution of their properties.

HSC is a recent, ambitious fast-growing project based on two XMM programs for a total of ~840 hours of observational time, enriched at other bands by ~20 accepted INAF-led follow-up programs for a multi-λ view of z>6 QSO/host properties. The coordinator is L. Zappacosta.

Both HYPERION and the Titans sample (coordinator L. Zappacosta) and WISSH (coordinator E.Piconcelli) are projects led by INAF researchers.

The majority of the co-investigators are working at INAF institutes. The PIs of XMM-HYPE, XMM-LP and of other ~20 additional follow-up programs on Titans and WISSH QSOs are INAF members or associated (Fig. 6). Notice that the XMM-HYPE is one of the largest ever XMM programs awarded so far (the fourth in terms of assigned total exposure time). The additional acceptance of a new XMM large program, almost at the end of the XMM-HYPE program, testifies the excellence of INAF researchers and of this INAF-led programme. In this regard, these programs are placing INAF at the forefront of the international extragalactic astronomical community.

Furthermore, most theoretical models and data analysis codes are created by INAF people (e.g. CAT) or developed in close collaboration with INAF researchers.
